Why Ryan Coogler Says Chadwick Boseman “Freaked Out” Disney Execs While Filming ‘Black Panther’

April 10, 2025 — In a recent interview that’s making waves among Marvel fans, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler revealed an intriguing behind-the-scenes moment where Chadwick Boseman — the late actor who brought King T’Challa to life — unintentionally “freaked out” Disney executives during filming.

According to Coogler, during the early stages of shooting the first Black Panther movie, Boseman’s now-iconic Wakandan accent caused some serious concern among the top brass at Disney.

“They were like, ‘What is he doing with the voice? Is this going to work?’” Coogler recalled, laughing. “They really freaked out.”

Executives, unfamiliar with the bold choice to have T’Challa speak in an authentic African accent, feared audiences might not connect with the character or understand the dialogue. However, Boseman remained confident and unshaken, believing it was essential to portray Wakanda as a proud African nation untouched by colonialism — and the accent was key to that authenticity.

Coogler stood by his lead actor’s choice, reassuring the studio that it would resonate. And it did. The accent — once a point of concern — became a defining element of the character and a symbol of cultural pride across the globe.

“It was Chad’s decision, and it was brilliant,” Coogler said. “He knew what he was doing.”

Black Panther went on to become a global phenomenon, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide and earning three Academy Awards. Boseman’s performance, particularly his powerful presence and cultural influence, became a cornerstone of his legacy.

Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020 after a private battle with cancer, but his impact on cinema and culture remains immeasurable. Stories like these continue to reveal just how much thought and passion he poured into every role.
